Shelby County Schools seeks community feedback on rezoning plans

Shelby County Schools will host its first proposed rezoning community meeting for families in the rural parts of the county where the merged system meets the six municipality districts.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at E.E. Jeter Elementary.

SCS is proposing that 33 kindergarten through fifth grade students living in its district attend E.E. Jeter, which would be reconfigured from a K-5 to a K-8 school.

The proposed change would also mean 85 sixth through eighth grade students residing in the Millington area would be rezoned E.E. Jeter.

School officials have not made any final decisions about the rezoning proposals, but are expected to vote on the issue sometime next month following the conclusion of all of the scheduled community meetings.

After receiving a first glimpse of the rezoning proposal during Wednesday night’s work session, some board members expressed concern that if the district bused students too far or didn’t send students to an academically comparable school, the district could lose students and the state funding that follows them.

More dates for the community meetings will be released as they are scheduled.
