Shelby County optional school campers offered “ticket” from the cold

Because of the frigid weather, Shelby County School administrators offered parents waiting to get optional school applications a guaranteed place in line Wednesday afternoon.

More than 80 people started camping out by Thursday afternoon to get the coveted applications which will be handed out Monday morning, according to The Commercial Appeal.

In the  guaranteed place-holder system, parents will pick up their numbered ticket, which corresponds with their bar-coded application at the Shelby County Schools district office, 160 Hollywood St. Applicants into the magnet school programs will be judged partly on how soon they pick up their application.

Tickets can be picked up until 6 p.m. today.  From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday  and from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

SCS made the temporary change in policy because of the cold weather,  not a change in board policy.
