Colonial Middle reaches out to parents, community with new event

Colonial Middle School is hosting its first Parent & Community Engagement Expo on Thursday Jan. 16.

The two-hour event will begin at 5 p.m. at the school, located at 1370 Colonial Road in Memphis.

The school’s Title I Instructional Facilitator Daphana McAllen is expecting 400 to 500 parents to participate.

“The purpose of the event is for our students to bring their parents to school so they can learn how to access our (learning) websites, practice math games and activities that they can do with their children at home,” McAllen said.

McAllen said the expo would also give families in need the opportunity to connect with community service agencies.

Representatives from Memphis Light, Gas and Water, the Memphis Fire Department and local outreach ministries will be present to discuss with parents the services and assistance they can provide their families.

“When the parents come in, they will register and we’ll give them a map of the booths in the building,” she said.  “Parents will visit at least three school-related booths before they can receive a ticket for food and door prizes.”
