Shelby County’s School Board will be moving toward answering some hard questions tomorrow night — including challenges around the creation of six new suburban school districts and how they’ll create next school year’s budget.
During a board retreat last week, Interim Chief Financial Officer Alicia Lindsey told the school board the district could lose more than 30,000 students and up to $52.6 million if all six municipalities were formed by next school year, according to The Commercial Appeal.
But suburban officials, like A. Keith McDonald, mayor of Bartlett, told Chalkbeat that the district isn’t calculating in the reduction in expenses.
“They haven’t told the whole story,” McDonald said.
In a separate but related issue, the Shelby County Board of Education will consider creating a “budget and finance standing committee” Tuesday.
The committee will be charged with, among other things, creating an operating budget for the 2014-15 school year.
The committee will meet on an “as needed” basis to approve budget amendments and discuss items of interest, said Stefani Everson, a district spokeswoman.
The board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Frances E. Coe Auditorium (160 S. Hollywood).
