Stand for Children along with the Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) will hold three meetings across Memphis in the next two weeks to facilitate conversations between parents and local educators about school choice.
Several of the neighborhoods where the meetings will take place have schools that are at risk of being taken over by the state’s Achievement School District for having some of the worst test scores in the state. A new list of schools that academically fall in the bottom five percent in the state will be released within the next month.
Parents will be able to ask officials with the Achievement School District, Shelby County Schools and local charter schools about the takeover process and what it will mean for their children.
Chalkbeat Tennessee staff will moderate the meetings.
The meetings will be held Tuesday at the Whitehaven Community Center at 4318 Graceland Dr. and Thursday at the Raleigh Community Center at 3678 Powers Rd. in Memphis. The final meeting will be held at McFarland Community Center at 4955 Cottonwood Rd. on July 28.
All of the meetings will start at 5:30 p.m. A free iPad mini will be given away at the end of each meeting.
