ASD adds new charter operator to its slate

The Achievement School District will open up a Montessori School next fall, the district announced Friday.

The Libertas School, led by Bob Nardo, a Tennessee Charter Center Fellow and former ASD administrator, will open in the fall of 2015. Nardo also previously worked as the Chief Operating Officer at KIPP’s TEAM Schools in Newark.

The Libertas School could takeover a school that falls within the bottom academically performing schools in the state, or start a new school.

The ASD’s mission is to propel the schools to the top 25 percent of schools in the state in five years. Of 23 schools in the ASD currently, 22 are in Memphis, and 18 are run by charter operators. The remaining five are run directly by the ASD.

The state department of education will release an updated list of the bottom 5 percent of schools  in the upcoming weeks.

Clarification: The ASD could  take over a school or start a school on its own. A previous version incorrectly described the certainty of the school’s upcoming plans.
